German frigate FGS Sachsen F219 destroyed a drone with laser weapons (video)
The German Navy tested laser weapons on the frigate Sachsen. It was used to destroy a drone.
Here's What We Know
Germany tested a laser weapon for the country's Navy. The tests took place in the Baltic Sea with the participation of the FGS frigate Sachsen F219. It used a laser to destroy an unmanned aerial vehicle in motion at low altitude.
The FGS Sachsen F219 was equipped with a laser weapon demonstrator earlier this summer. The tests are being overseen by the Department of Defense's Federal Office of Equipment, Information Technology and Technical Support (BAAINBw). They will last until mid-2023. The laser will be tested in the air and on the ground.
The weapon consists of a dozen 2 kW fiber laser modules. A dielectric array is used to combine the beams. The laser is developed by the ARGE conglomerate, which includes the German division of MBDA and Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH. The technology is characterized by ease of production, modularity and the ability to increase power up to 100 kW.
