The United States will build a new airbase in Australia for B-52H Stratofortress strategic bombers.

Here's What We Know

The new military facility will be built next to the Royal Australian Air Force's Tindal Air Base, which is 320 kilometers southeast of the city of Darwin. The base will be home to six nuclear-powered bombers.

A B-52 Stratofortress squadron operational control center will be located on the military site. The United States will also establish infrastructure to support maintenance and repair of the bombers.

U.S. Air Force officials say the presence of the B-52 Stratofortress in Australia will demonstrate to China that any aggression toward Taiwan will have consequences. The airbase is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
