The Defense Science and Technology Laboratory of the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defense has tested laser weapons for the first time.

Here's What We Know

The system is called DragonFire. It is a long-range laser directed energy weapon (LDEW). Tests took place at the site of the Ministry of Defense in Wiltshire.

As part of the tests, experts used DragonFire to destroy targets at different distances. In the tests took part in the prototype system, which was able to provide the necessary level of accuracy of the beam direction to hit objects.

In addition to the British Defense Science and Technology Laboratory, Leonardo, QinetiQ and MBDA are working on the laser system. The UK government website states that DragonFire is designed to destroy enemy drones and artillery shells.
