BAE Systems has completed tests of 70 mm missiles equipped with a laser guidance system and a new warhead manufactured by General Dynamics.

Here's What We Know

The 70mm missiles received the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) guidance system paired with a High-Explosive Anti-Tank Anti-Personnel Anti-Materiel (HEAT/APAM) warhead. This combination is capable of turning an unguided projectile into a high-precision missile.

BAE Systems says that in a recent test, the missiles were able to successfully hit armored vehicles from long distances and a massive steel plate. The company notes that the laser guidance kit gives aircraft and helicopters the ability to deliver "surgical strikes" from a distance of more than 3 kilometers.

The APKWS laser guidance systems are available not only for the US Army. BAE Systems will be able to supply guidance kits to U.S. allies.
