Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, spoke at an event celebrating the successful test of the Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile.

Here's What We Know

According to Kim, North Korea wants the most powerful strategic force in the world, which is unprecedented in the 21st century. The head of state presented awards to the military who participated in the missile test. There was also a joint photo taken at the event with Hwasong-17 in the background.

North Korea's military says the ballistic missile was able to climb to an altitude of more than 6,000 kilometers in almost 70 minutes and flew 999 kilometers. The test took place on November 18. According to the South Korean military, the northern neighbor's missile flew 1,000 kilometers, reaching an altitude of 6,100 kilometers.

The Hwasong-17 is the DPRK's new intercontinental ballistic missile. It was unveiled in mid-fall 2020 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea.

If North Korean authorities are to be believed, the first successful test took place in March 2022. The Hwasong-17 has two stages and uses liquid fuel. It has a maximum warhead weight of 3,500 kg and a range of at least 15,000 km.
