Last week, the United States announced that the Ohio-class submarine USS Michigan had visited the Japanese island of Okinawa.

Here's What We Know

According to the United States Navy, the nuclear-powered submarine made a brief stop off the island of Okinawa on November 10. This is seen as a signal to North Korea, which is actively testing its missiles by launching them toward Japan.

The DPRK was probably not intimidated by the American submarine. Eight days after the visit of the USS Michigan, North Korea successfully tested the Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile, which reached an altitude of over 6,000 meters and flew almost 1,000 kilometers. The maximum launch range is more than 15,000 km.

The USS Michigan, unlike other Ohio-class submarines, cannot carry Trident II D5 intercontinental missiles with nuclear warheads. The submarine lost this capability, but now can carry 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles.
