Israel and the U.S. have begun development of the Iron Beam laser weapon, which will be integrated into the missile defense system.

Here's What We Know

Three years ago, the Israeli Defense Ministry announced a breakthrough in work on laser weapons. Rafael has been developing a ground-based system, and Elbit System has begun work on an airborne system.

Lockheed Martin will help Rafael work on the laser missile defense system. The signed agreement provides for joint work on the project, testing and production in both Israel and the United States. And eventually there will be two modifications of the Iron Beam - for Israel and the United States.

The power of the laser is 100 watts. Tel Aviv is planning to integrate the Iron Beam into the country's air defense system to provide protection of critical infrastructure and strategic facilities. Arrow-3, Stunner and Iron Dome systems are currently used for this purpose.
