The first Reis-class submarine began sea trials in Turkey. This was announced by the Ministry of Defense of the country.
Here's What We Know
Piri Reis is a Type 214 TN diesel-electric submarine equipped with an air-independent power plant. This feature gives the submarine the ability to float without having to surface.
The Piri Reis is likely to be adopted by the Turkish Navy next year, one year late. The submarine was developed by Turkey's Turkish Defense Industries and Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems at the Gölcük Naval Shipyard.
Piri Reis was launched in 2019. She has a length of more than 68 meters. The new Turkish submarine will be able to carry mines, anti-ship missiles and heavy torpedoes.
Within the next five years, the Turkish Navy intends to adopt five more Reis-class submarines. They are called TCG Hizir Reis, TCG Murat Reis, TCG Aydin Reis, TCG Seydi Ali Reis and TCG Selman Reis.
