Saab received a $337 million contract to upgrade JAS 39 Gripen fighters

The Swedish Defense Technology Agency has signed a contract with Saab for the modernization of multirole fighters JAS 39 Gripen.

Here's What We Know

Both C (one-pilot) and D (two-pilot) versions of the aircraft are to be upgraded. The cost of the contract is $337 million, and the execution period is 2023-2029. As a result of modernization the Swedish Air Force will get a more efficient fighter jet.

JAS 39 Gripen will be equipped with a new engine, improving the aircraft's flight performance. A more effective electronic warfare system will also be installed. The contract involves upgrading Saab's radar, providing enhanced capabilities, increased tracking and detection range. In addition, new avionics will be installed as part of the upgrade.

Company officials have already said that the deal with the Swedish Defense Technology Agency is a "leap forward in terms of radar performance and functionality." Jonas Hjelm, one of the Swedish company's top executives, stressed that the upgrade will improve the interoperability of the JAS 39 Gripen C/D with the Gripen E.
