Tyndall Air Force Base is preparing for the arrival of the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter jets.

The 325th Fighter Wing sent an F-22 Raptor fighter jet to the museum. It was loaded into a Lockheed C-5 Galaxy aircraft and sent to the Hill Aerospace Museum, which is located at Utah Air Force Base of the same name.

Museum officials said they have been on the hunt for the F-22 Raptor for a long time, so they immediately applied for the plane as soon as they got the opportunity. The fighter jet is expected to be shown to more than 300,000 visitors each year.

The F-35A Lightning II will be arriving at the base soon. The decision to make Tyndall the location for Lockheed Martin fighters was made by the U.S. Air Force back in March 2021. The choice was made after analyzing a variety of factors, including infrastructure, quality of life for pilots and airspace. Experts also conducted a detailed environmental impact analysis under the National Environmental Policy Act. The base will house three squadrons of aircraft.

Tyndall Air Force Base was the first United States Department of Defense facility. The Pentagon was able to rebuild the military facility to accommodate the unique needs of the F-35A Lightning II, but it was a forced move. The base had to be repurposed after it was badly damaged by Hurricane Michael in October 2018.
