The Japanese government has approved long-range missiles for naval submarines. The decision will soon be made official and outlined in three security documents.

Here's What We Know

The Land of the Rising Sun plans to modify the Type 12 missile, increasing its range from 200 km to 1,200 km. An improved version will be created within a few years. The submarines will be equipped with vertical launch systems. Not a single Japanese submarine can boast of this at the moment. There are a total of 21 submarines in service.

In addition to upgrading the Type 12, Japan wants to receive American Tomahawk cruise missiles from Raytheon. A few days ago it became known that the cost of one Block V level missile is about $1.5 million. The launch range reaches 1600 km. Japan wants to buy 500 units.

Japan will double its defense spending in five years. Tokyo plans to buy 13 air refueling and transport aircraft, five E2D Hawkeye early warning aircraft and one electronic warfare aircraft. It is also preparing to upgrade the Patriot PAC 3 to counter China's DF-17 ballistic missiles.
