The Department of Defense of the United States announced the signing of a contract with Boeing, under which the aircraft will be modernized.

Here's What We Know

We are talking about F/A-18 Super Hornet fighters and carrier-based radar warfare aircraft EA-18G Growler. What is more the Growler, which made its first flight in the summer of 2006, was built on the basis of the Super Hornet, which first flew 11 years earlier.

The contract value was just over $2 billion. Work will be performed in St. Louis, Missouri (86%); El Segundo, California (11%); and China Lake, California (3%). The contract is expected to be completed in December 2027.

As part of the upgrade, the F/A-18 Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler will receive updated software and hardware "to realize the aircraft's new capabilities." The Pentagon said in a statement that both U.S. Navy aircraft and aircraft being prepared for sale will undergo upgrades.
