Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) will develop a plan to modernize two Zumwalt-class destroyers. It has already received $10.5 million from the U.S. Navy for this purpose.

Here's What We Know

HII President Kari Wilkinson said the company's experts will support the modernization capabilities of two of the newest Zumwalt-class destroyers in service with the U.S. Navy. We are talking about USS Zumwalt and USS Michael Monsoor. The first in the coming years will be equipped with hypersonic missiles.

HII is investing a lot of money in building and improving the infrastructure, equipment and tools that are needed to modernize today's ships. The company's investments are approaching $1 billion.

The Zumwalt destroyers are equipped with electric propulsion and have sophisticated combat technology and weaponry. Their purpose is to provide anti-aircraft support to the fleet.

Three destroyers have been created within the Zumwalt class. In addition to the previously mentioned USS Zumwalt and USS Michael Monsoor, the U.S. Navy has the USS Lyndon B. Johnson. By the way, HII was awarded a contract to supply combat systems for the third Zumawalt-class ship.
