Lockheed Martin has tested a 50kW DEIMOS laser weapon for Stryker combat vehicles - it will be able to shoot down missiles, drones and helicopters
The US company Lockheed Martin has successfully conducted a new phase of tests of the DEIMOS tactical laser weapon system. The manufacturer has reported receiving the "first light" on the laser system.
Here's What We Know
Lockheed Martin has demonstrated the beam quality of an affordable 50kW-class laser architecture. The development of the device is in line with US Army requirements and is part of the Army's modernisation strategy. DEIMOS will be able to destroy mines, missiles, projectiles, helicopters and drones.
The tactical laser launcher will be integrated into Stryker infantry fighting vehicles. The aim is to provide directed energy capability as part of the Maneuverable Short Range Air Defence (M-SHORAD) mission.
Lockheed Martin delivered HELIOS laser units for ships and HELSI for ground forces last year. The power was 60 kW and 300 kW, respectively. Tests of individual DEIMOS components will continue through 2023, with full integration field trials starting next year.
