In parallel with preparations for the Challenger 2 shipment to Ukraine, the UK is working on a new main battle tank. The military has finally agreed a final design for the Challenger 3 with Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL).

Here's What We Know

The UK Ministry of Defence has announced that a joint venture between Rheinmetall and BAE Systems could begin work on the first Challenger 3 prototype. The defence department has awarded RBSL an £800m contract in 2021, under which the British Army is to receive 148 tanks by the end of 2027.

RBSL is testing a new armour system that has been developed specifically for the Challenger 3. Rafael's Rafael-developed Trophy active protection system will be used to protect against anti-tank missiles.

The Challenger 3 will be fitted with a new turret that is compatible with allied tanks. This means it can be mounted on vehicles from other countries. The upgrade also includes a new 120mm L55A1 cannon.

The Challenger 3 will feature a new hydro-gas suspension and upgraded power pack. The tank will have a top speed of 60km/h.
