The US Army will be able to repair all the CH-47 Chinook helicopters that ceased flight in 2022 by the end of winter

At the end of the summer of 2022, the US Army was forced to temporarily decommission its entire fleet of CH-47 Chinook helicopters. The problem is expected to be resolved by the end of winter.

A leaky part has been found in the engines of the Honeywell T-55, which has led to several fires. This was reported by the maintenance officer of the US Army Aviation and Missile Command.

During routine maintenance, it was found that U.S. Army repairmen used o-rings to prevent leaks. However, these parts did not meet Honeywell's design specifications and were supplied by a third-party firm.

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) said the military was using the "wrong" o-rings. The agency has awarded a new contract to supply two hundred "correct" parts. The US Army cannot ascertain how many engines are equipped with the "wrong" parts. This is due to the fact that the rings do not have a serial number. Therefore, it was decided to replace the rings in all engines without exception.
