During US President Joe Biden's visit to Ukraine, Russia announced that it had tested the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile. According to CNN, the test failed.

Here's What We Know

The information was shared anonymously by two US officials. According to one of the sources, the tests were unsuccessful. During the tests, the missile had a second-degree failure. Because of this, it went down.

Incidentally, according to CNN, the Russian president was supposed to talk about the missile tests during his Feb. 21 speech, but in the end the reference to the missile was removed. Instead, Putin announced that Russia was suspending its participation in the nuclear arms reduction treaty (START-III) with the U.S.

Flashback

The Sarmat is an intercontinental ballistic missile that the Russian defence ministry says can carry a nuclear charge of 8 megatons and hit targets up to 18,000km away. The missile was first tested in 2022.
