Japan will buy 400 Tomahawk cruise missiles worth $1.6bn
Japan's purchase of American Tomahawk cruise missiles has been decided. And the number is already known.
Here's What We Know
Despite the fact that the post-war constitution significantly limits Japan's military capabilities, last year the Land of the Rising Sun decided to double its defence spending. By 2027 they will reach 2% of the country's GDP.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Japan would buy 400 Tomahawk cruise missiles. The Defense Ministry has budgeted $1.6 billion for this in the next fiscal year.
We are only now learning about the number of missiles, although the amount was known late last year. In addition to the $1.6 billion for missiles, Japan is investing $832 million to upgrade ships with the Aegis missile defense system to "teach" them how to launch Tomahawk.
