Bell Textron has announced that aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney has joined the development of the next-generation convertible. The company supplies propulsion systems for the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, among others, and is working on an engine for the next-generation aircraft.

Here's What We Know

The convertiplane is being developed as part of the United States Air Force's High-Speed Vertical Takeoff and Landing (HSVTOL) program. Bell Textron was one of 11 companies (out of 200 applicants) to receive research funding to develop a high-speed aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing.

According to a statement from the Texas-based company, Pratt & Whitney will provide advanced propulsion solutions to support the convertorcraft. Bell director Lee Anderson welcomed Pratt & Whitney to join the project. In parallel, Pratt & Whitney spokesman Steven Burd said the new propulsion system will allow Bell to demonstrate the next-generation HSVTOL capability.

The convertiplane will be able to reach a speed of 740 km/h and will have a long range. The vertical take-off and landing aircraft will be used for personnel transport, strike, as well as reconnaissance, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
