Northrop Grumman tests engine for next-generation intercontinental ballistic missile Sentinel, which will replace Minuteman III

The United States has upgraded the old Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile several times, but it will be retired in the coming years. The Sentinel missile will take its place.

Northrop Grumman recently tested an engine for a next-generation intercontinental ballistic missile. According to the manufacturer, the engine, which was installed in the first stage, during the tests worked in normal mode in accordance with the set parameters. All indicators were normal.

The Ministry of Defense and Northrop Grumman do not disclose the characteristics of the advanced intercontinental ballistic missile. All that is known is that it will be able to use the Mk.12A and Mk.21 types of warheads for Minuteman III.

In the next stage of development, Northrop Grumman will carry out flight tests of the solid propulsion system. The Sentinel missile will begin replacing all 450 Minuteman III missiles in 2027 and will be in service until 2075. The cost of the development programme is almost $100bn.
