New photo of B-21 Raider reveals impressive feature of next-generation nuclear bomber
The United States Air Force has published new photos of the B-21 Raider strategic aircraft. The images revealed a rather interesting feature of the bomber. The photos were taken on November 28, a few days before the presentation.
Here's What We Know
Three months ago, the B-21 Raider next-generation nuclear bomber was unveiled in California at the Palmdale plant. Northrop Grumman and the US Air Force took the safety issue very seriously, limiting journalists even in the angle from which they were allowed to take photos of the aircraft.
In the new photo, the air intakes immediately catch the eye. They are very deeply recessed in the bomber's hull. This feature was difficult to see in the photos from the official presentation of the aircraft because of the angle.
This design is intended to ensure a very low visibility for the strategic aircraft. It harks back to the features of diverterless air intakes that were used on aircraft in the past.
In addition, there are openings on the wings of the nuclear bomber for conformal antennas. These are responsible for providing stable satellite communications.
The B-21 Raider will make its first flight in 2023. Northrop Grumman now has 6 prototypes in various stages of assembly. The US Air Force received $1.3bn to buy its first bomber in 2023, and the service wants a total of 100 aircraft in service.
