The US Air Force's fiscal year 2024 budget stockpile includes plans to decommission more than 300 aircraft, helicopters and drones. We have already written about A-10 Thunderbolt II, B-1B Lancer, F-15 Eagle, MQ-9 Reaper Block 1 and F-22 Raptor. But the service doesn't want to stop there.

Here's What We Know

The US Air Force wants to scrap 37 HH-60G Pave Hawk rescue helicopters and one Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk drone. But mainly the aircraft will get scraped:

  • 24 KC-10A Extender aerial refuelers;
  • three E-8C JSTARS combat control and targeting aircraft;
  • two E-3 Sentry long-range radar detection planes;
  • 2 EC-130H Compass Call electronic warfare aircraft;
  • 4 EC-130J psychological warfare aircraft;
  • 3 A-29 Super Tucano attack aircraft;
  • 52 T-1A Jayhawk training planes.

Despite the fact that more than 300 aircraft will be decommissioned, the US Air Force wants to acquire only 95 aircraft. 72 of these are F-35 Lightning II and F-15EX Eagle II fighters. It is also known that instead of E-3 Sentry the US wants 26 Boeing E-7 Wedgetail planes by 2026.
