The US Army has finally been able to assemble its debut battle group, which consists exclusively of modernised military equipment. It consists of tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, howitzers and armoured personnel carriers.

Here's What We Know

The formation was completed this week when the 1st Armoured Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry Division received Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) armoured personnel carriers. They were developed by BAE Systems and are based on the M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle.

The AMPV is a replacement for the older M113 armoured personnel carriers. They have been in service with the U.S. Army for approximately 60 years. The introduction of the AMPV marks the beginning of the end for the M113.

A decision is expected to be made by the end of the first quarter to begin full-scale production of the AMPV. The US Army has budgeted more than $680 million in fiscal year 2023 for the purchase of 131 armoured personnel carriers. The procurement will take place in fiscal year 2024.

The 3rd Infantry Division is the first to receive a fully modernized armored brigade combat team. In addition to AMPV armored personnel carriers, it includes Abrams SepV3 tanks, M2A4 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and M109A7 Paladin Integrated Management self-propelled howitzers.
