Canada wants to buy 14 P-8A Poseidon anti-submarine aircraft for $6bn

The Canadian government has expressed a desire to upgrade its fleet of 14 maritime patrol aircraft. Ottawa is ready to spend billions of dollars to acquire the Boeing P-8A Poseidon.

Canada is considering the purchase of 14 Boeing anti-submarine patrol aircraft. They will replace the CP-140 Aurora, which was developed by Lockheed Martin.

The entire program, if signed, would cost about $6 billion. Canada is close to an agreement because Defense Minister Anita Anand recently visited the US where she held talks with Boeing representatives.

The purchase of P-8A anti-submarine patrol aircraft will expand Canada's maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare and intelligence gathering capabilities in regions of interest. A bonus is that the Poseidon uses 86% of Boeing's 737NG components, and Canada has previously purchased more than 100 737NG aircraft.
