Here's What We Know
Two B-1B Lancer supersonic strategic bombers flew over the Korean peninsula on March 19, together with American F-16 Fighting Falcon and South Korean F-35A Lightning II fighters. This happened on the same day that North Korea conducted another missile test off its coast.
Freedom Shield 23 coincides with the largest US-Korean exercise in five years. They began on March 13 and are called Warrior Shield FTX. A press release from the two countries' armed forces said the Republic of Korea and the U.S. are demonstrating a credible joint defensive posture.
The B-1B Lancer bombers returned to the Republic of Korea in November 2022 after a five-year hiatus. Since the beginning of 2023, the planes have participated in the exercise four times. Before Freedom Shield 23, supersonic bombers took to the skies on February 1 with an F-22, on February 19 with an F-16 and an F-35A, and on March 3 with an F-15K and a KF-16.
