The US Navy has completed an upgrade of the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71). It took a year and a half to complete at NAS North Island Naval Air Station.

Here's What We Know

The USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) was modified to support F-35C Lighting II fifth-generation deck fighters. The USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) also received new electronic warfare systems and a gun. In addition, all living quarters below the flight deck were repaired.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) is the fourth nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. In the fall of 1986, the ship, equipped with two nuclear reactors with 260,000 horsepower turbines, was commissioned into the U.S. Navy.

The aircraft carrier has a displacement of 103,900 tonnes, a width of nearly 77 metres and a length of about 333 metres. The warship is equipped with Mark 15 Phalanx CIWS surface-to-air missile systems and Mk 29 Sea Sparrow air-to-air missile launchers. The ship can reach speeds of up to 56km/h.

In addition to the F-35C, the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) can carry E-2D Advanced Hawkeye long-range surveillance aircraft, F/A-18 Hornet fighters, Osprey convertorcraft, MQ-25 Stringray unmanned tankers and helicopters (up to 90).
