In early 2023, Canada officially announced the purchase of 88 F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation fighter jets. But to operate, the world's 7th largest country must invest in infrastructure upgrades.

Here's What We Know

The total cost of the deal to buy 88 F-35A aircraft was $14.2 billion, with Canada initially financing the purchase of 16 fighters and equipment to the tune of $7 billion. Deliveries will begin in 2026, and full operational readiness is not expected before 2032.

Another $5.6 billion will be invested by the Canadian government in modernization of military aviation infrastructure. Without this step, Ottawa simply will not be able to accept fifth-generation fighters into service.

The funds will be used not only to modernize existing fighter aviation facilities, but also to build new ones. In addition, the project will introduce a new element of the early warning system in the south of the country.
