Germany wants to buy up to 28 Panzerhaubitze 2000 to replace self-propelled howitzers that have been transferred to Ukraine
Germany will hand over more than a dozen Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled artillery units, considered to be among the best in the world, to the Ukrainian armed forces in 2022. They will be replaced with new howitzers.
Here's What We Know
The German Defence Ministry has provided Ukraine with 14 Panzerhaubitze 2000 units. The draft budget envisages the allocation of €180m for the purchase of at least 10 self-propelled howitzers manufactured by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). In addition, Germany will be able to order up to 18 more artillery pieces in the future.
The document states that the German defence ministry intends to initiate options for purchasing 12 howitzers in the near future to replace all the weapons transferred to Ukraine. Additionally, Germany plans to compensate for the supply of spare parts to Ukraine. The parliamentary budget committee is due to decide on the deal as early as today, 29 March.
The Panzerhaubitze 2000 is considered one of the most powerful artillery pieces in service with the Bundeswehr. The howitzer is capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 30 km with conventional ammunition. In this case, the range is increased up to 100 km using improved types of shells.
