US Air Force sends four B-52H nuclear bombers to Guam
The US Air Force has redeployed B-52H Stratofortress nuclear bombers to the island of Guam. This was announced by the command of Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.
Here's What We Know
On March 30, 2023, 210 pilots and four strategic aircraft arrived on the island of Guam, which is 2,000 kilometres from Taiwan. The planes will be based at Andresen military airbase.
The B-52H Stratofortress of the 96th Expeditionary Bomber Squadron will be tasked to support Pacific Air Force training activities that also involve allied and partner forces. The mission will help airmen focus on the full spectrum of military operations.
The B-52H deployment to Guam will not only allow the crews to hone their skills. The arrival of the strategic bombers at Andersen will send a crucial message that demonstrates the U.S. is ready to help its allies in the Indo-Pacific region. Lt Col Vanessa Wilcox, commander of the 96th Bomber Squadron, said.
Late last month, two B-52H nuclear bombers, together with Japanese fighters, visited the area in the Sea of Japan, where Russia tested the P-270 Mosquito (NATO-codified SS-N-22 Sunburn) missile. The launches took place on March 28.
