The legendary A-10C Thunderbolt II from Moody Air Force Base makes its last flight before retiring after 14,125 flight hours
Moody Air Force Base is retiring its first A-10C Thunderbolt attack aircraft. It made its maiden flight the other day.
Here's What We Know
On April 5, 2023, the legendary A-10C Thunderbolt aircraft, numbered 80-149, took to the skies for the last time, taking off from Moody Air Force Base, Georgia. The aircraft departed for Davis Monthan Base, Arizona.
This A-10C Thunderbolt was the first attack aircraft from Moody's to reach retirement age. It has 14,125 flight hours to its credit. The Georgia base became a new home for 23 attack aircraft in 2007, when it accepted 23 A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft that had arrived from North Carolina. All were upgraded to the A-10C.
After 43 years of dedicated service, the A-10 will find a new home in the sunny Arizona desert. The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Recovery Squadron will retain parts that can be used to repair other Thunderbolt II aircraft.
In total, the US Air Force will retire 21 A-10 Thunderbolt IIs in 2023. The fiscal year 2024 budget request calls for the retirement of an additional 42 aircraft.
