Fifth-generation F-22 fighters intercept two Russian Tu-95 nuclear bombers near Alaska
Russian nuclear bombers have been intercepted by US aircraft near Alaska. This was reported by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
Here's What We Know
The Tu-95 bombers entered the Alaska Air Defense Identification Area. Fifth-generation F-22 Raptor, a fourth-generation fighter, was used for the intercept. Also participating in the mission were fourth-generation F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters, a KC-135 Stratotanker air refueler and an E-3 Sentry long-range radar detection aircraft (in that order in the photo below).
According to the command, the Russian aircraft remained in international airspace. The bombers did not cross US or Canadian airspace during the flight.
NORAD reports that the actions of the Tu-95 are not seen as a threat or provocation. Such activities of Russian strategic aircraft in the air defense identification area of North America are regularly observed.
