BAE Systems receives new ECRS Mk2 radar for Eurofighter Typhoon
Leonardo has delivered to BAE Systems a prototype of an advanced radar for installation on Eurofighter Typhoon fighters. It is called the European Common Radar System Mk2 (ECRS Mk2).
Here's What We Know
The radar has been delivered to the BAE Systems flight test facility in Wharton, Lancashire, UK. The British company will be able to begin flight tests of the ECRS Mk2 next year. The test aircraft will be one of the Eurofighter Typhoon single-seat fighters. During the current year, BAE Systems will be involved in radar integration and ground tests.
A UK Ministry of Defence press release states that the new radar will provide the aircraft with world-leading electronic warfare capabilities. The ECRS Mk2 will enable fighters to detect, identify and track multiple targets simultaneously in the air and on the ground.
The Eurofighter Typhoon with the new radar will be able to suppress enemy air defenses and engage targets out of range. The fighters will form the backbone of the air combat capability to defend the United Kingdom over the coming decades.
The ECRS Mk2 is being developed as part of the £2.35bn Phased 4 Enhancement programme, and involves Italy, Spain and Germany alongside the UK. The programme is creating 1,300 new jobs and will continue to support a total of over 20,000 jobs in the UK.
