China tests artillery system with artificial intelligence - AI improves accuracy to an unprecedented level

The Chinese People's Liberation Army has tested an artillery gun with artificial intelligence. According to China's South China Morning Post, the gun demonstrated unprecedented accuracy that no other weapon in the army's arsenal can match.

The artillery cannon is capable of accurately hitting a person at a distance of 16km if artificial intelligence is used to guide the target. The accuracy demonstrated by the cannon during tests exceeded all expectations. But it is worth noting that there is no confirmation beyond a few photos and articles on Chinese websites.

The project was led by Chinese professor Wang Jiang of the Beijing Institute of Technology. His work was published in the journal Acta Armamentarii earlier this month.

According to the professor, artificial intelligence is capable of processing data much faster than traditional mathematical methods. The gun is equipped with sensors, radars and cameras to collect information on target location, wind speed and other factors that need to be taken into account during firing.

The data collected is sent to a computer, which calculates the optimum angle and force to fire. Moreover, the system is capable of automatically correcting firing in real time if it receives information on changes in the environment.

Conventional projectiles can deviate from the target by up to 100 metres. Guided munitions are used to solve the problem, but their accuracy is also limited, as a huge number of factors need to be taken into account in real time to correct course during flight. Artificial intelligence does that instantly.

Chinese scientists have also tested several AI models in jobs involving complex changes in the trajectory of a projectile. According to them, the "division of labour" between several models has significantly increased the accuracy of hitting targets.

Artillery systems based on artificial intelligence will make it possible to accurately destroy enemy units and hidden military equipment. And they will cost less and act more effectively than missiles.
