Turkey launches Ukrainian engines for first time on advanced T929 ATAK-II attack helicopter
Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) has conducted its first engine test as part of the advanced T929 ATAK-II attack helicopter. The development is taking place under the Ağır Sınıf Taarruz Helikopter programme.
Here's What We Know
T929 ATAK-II is equipped with TV3-117VMA-SBM1V-01T engines produced in Ukraine by Motor Sich. The contract was signed in 2021. Turkey will receive 14 power units by 2025. Last month it was reported that the first two engines had already been delivered to the TAI factory.
Tests of the aircraft were conducted at a test site in Ankara. A video shows the helicopter firing the engines and main propellers.
The ATAK-II is expected to enter service with the Turkish Army and Navy in 2025. The Army will be the first to receive the T929, with three units. The helicopter will be able to reach speeds of up to 380km/h. The maximum takeoff weight will be 10 tonnes including 1.5 tonnes of payload.
The ATAK-II will be armed with MKE FFAR, Hydra 70, CRV7, UMTAS, L-UMTAS, Cirit and AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles. There are six suspension points for these missiles. The helicopter will also receive a 30 mm cannon.
