Lockheed Martin received $4.79bn to produce GMLRS guided munitions for M142 HIMARS and M270 MLRS
The US has been sending large quantities of GMLRS precision-guided missiles to Ukraine since last summer. The US Army has signed a new contract with Lockheed Martin to replenish the stockpile.
Here's What We Know
The new deal amounted to $4.79bn. The number of missiles was not specified. What is known, however, is that the US Army wants to increase production of GMLRS from 6,000 to 14,000 units a year and sign a multi-year agreement in fiscal year 2024.
Work under the new contract will be carried out at Lockheed Martin plants in Arkansas, Texas, Pennsylvania, Orlando, Florida and is due to be completed by 30 October 2026. The $4.79 billion agreement calls for the production of two batches of GMLRS missiles, associated equipment and logistical support for the US Army and international partners.
The GMLRS is a family of 227mm all-weather guided missiles, which are used in the M142 HIMARS and M270 MLRS missile systems. The cost per projectile is approximately $170,000.
