The Republic of Korea's Defence Acquisition Agency (DAPA) intends to put more effort into intercepting enemy air threats. The agency is investing in the development of advanced anti-missile systems.

Here's What We Know

The country's Defense Project Promotion Committee (DPPC) has approved funding for the development of the L-SAM II long-range surface-to-air missile. The project will receive $2.02 billion in funding and the development will last from 2024 to 2035.

The South Korean Defense Development Agency (ADD) will develop L-SAM II in partnership with LIG Nex1, a local aerospace manufacturer. The new interceptor will be aimed primarily at destroying North Korea's hypersonic and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

In the case of ICBMs, it will be the new Hwaseong-18 solid-propellant missile. L-SAM II will be able to destroy air threats at altitudes between 40km and 100km. The new interceptor has a maximum launch range of 150 km.

The Republic of Korea is also investing in the development of M-SAM Block III. The DPPC has approved funding of $2.11 billion for the period 2024-2034. The medium-range missile interceptor will be an advanced version of M-SAM Block II, with improved intercept and engage characteristics for effective response to North Korean missiles.
