Poland may order additional batteries of coastal missile systems with NSM anti-ship missiles worth $720 million

Poland may reinforce its coast guard with Naval Strike Missile (NSM) missile systems. This was reported by local publication Defence24, but there is no official information about the procurement at the moment.

Here's What We Know

According to the Polish web resource, the Ministry of National Defence is finalising negotiations on the purchase of a large batch of coastal missile systems with NSM missiles for the Navy. The amount of the deal was approximately $720 million.

The NSM is an anti-ship missile developed by Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace. It uses an inertial guidance system and GPS, and has a thermal imaging guidance system that comes into play in the final stage of flight.

The missile is nearly 4 metres long, has a 1.4-metre wingspan and is capable of engaging targets at a range of approximately 200 km. The NSM weighs 344kg. The solid propellant rocket motor increases the mass by more than 60 kg.

The NSM can be launched from ships and land-based launchers. There is also an aircraft version of the missile. It is called the Joint Strike Missile (JSM). It is carried by the fifth generation F-35 fighters and the older F-15E, F-16 and F/A-18E/F.

The Polish Navy currently has two NSM batteries in service. The first was ordered in 2008 and received in 2012. The second battery was received by Poland in 2017, three years after the acquisition.
