€2,900,000,000 contract: Germany to buy new Leopard 2A8 tanks for the first time

The German Ministry of Defence plans to procure Leopard 2 tanks in a new A8 modification.

The information was shared by Bloomberg, citing sources in the country's defence ministry. The first batch will number 18 tanks. The cost of the purchase will amount to 525,000,000 euros. In this way, the Bundeswehr will replace the Leopard 2A6 tanks, which it handed over to Ukraine. Germany then plans to buy 105 more vehicles. The total amount of the contract will be 2,900,000,000 euros. The first deliveries of the armaments are due to start in 2025.

The Leopard 2A8 will be based on the Leopard 2A7HU, which was specially developed for Hungary. The Leopard 2A8 will be equipped with Israel's Trophy Active Shield System and improved anti-tank missile and mine protection. The fighting vehicle will also receive a new propulsion system. Improved optics will enable the crew to conduct reconnaissance at greater distances. The new tank will also be fitted with a Rheinmetall L55 120-mm gun, which is used in the Leopard 2A7+.
