Romania approves purchase of 54 M1A2 Abrams tanks worth over $1bn
The Romanian army will have more than 50 American M1 Abrams tanks in service in the coming years. The Defence, Public Order and National Security Commission has approved the purchase of the combat vehicles from General Dynamics.

Romania will order 54 M1A2 Abrams tanks as part of its army rearmament programme. The amount of the deal will be €1 billion ($1.08 billion). The tank purchase process will begin as early as 2023, but the contract deadline is not specified.
The deal will include the purchase of ammunition, associated equipment and training of crews. It is also known that 12 of the 54 M1A2 Abrams tanks will be delivered to Romania from the US Department of Defense stocks.
Note that Romania initially expressed a desire to purchase 200 M1 Abrams tanks from the United States. This was reported by Defense Romania, citing industry sources familiar with the matter, who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity.
