U.S. partially halts data transfer to russia on its strategic nuclear weapons, including information on launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles
Since June 1, the US has restricted the transfer of nuclear weapons data to Russia as part of the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms, also known as New START.
Here's What We Know
The US government's decision comes as Russia continues to violate the agreement. The State Department has said that the US will not notify the Russian Federation of the deployment of missiles and launchers.
The restrictions also apply to telemetric flight information. The US will not share data on launches of its intercontinental ballistic missiles, including ballistic missiles that are mounted on submarines.
The US State Department notes that the countermeasures taken do not violate international law in any way. It is a necessary step to encourage Russia to start complying with its international obligations. America is ready to return to compliance with the Treaty, if the Russian Federation does the same.
