Norway to retire 50-year-old P-3 Orion maritime reconnaissance planes and sell them to Argentina for $67m
The Royal Norwegian Air Force will decommission P-3 Orion maritime reconnaissance planes in a few days. Some of them will be sold to Argentina.
Here's What We Know
The Royal Norwegian Air Force has been using P-3 aircraft for more than 50 years. On 30 June 2023 they will be retired. A farewell ceremony will be held at Andoya Air Base in the northern part of the country.
Norway will decommission six P-3s. They will be replaced by Boeing's P-8A Poseidon anti-submarine patrol aircraft. They can fly at altitudes above 12,000 metres and reach speeds of more than 900 kilometres per hour.
Four of the six P-3 Orions will be sold to Argentina. The Scandinavian country has agreed to sell the jets to Lockheed for $67m. They will provide support for patrol operations in the South Atlantic Ocean. But before that the planes will be shipped to the US.
