Greece moves closer to buying 20+20 F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation fighter jets - US Senate Foreign Relations Committee approves deal
Greece is one step closer to purchasing F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation fighter jets. The official request was made in the summer of 2022.
Here's What We Know
The deal was previously approved by Senator Robert Menendez. Now James Risch, head of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, has signed off on the document.
The US State Department will be able to send a request to the US Congress to approve the deal. Greece wants to get its first F-35 aircraft in 2028. If all goes according to plan, deliveries will continue until 2033.
In June 2022, Greece submitted a request to buy 20 fifth-generation fighters with an option for 20 more. The country's air force now uses fourth-generation F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. The service plans to upgrade 83 of the fighters to F-16V Block 70/72.
