Netherlands to purchase AARGM-ER radar-guided missiles for F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation fighters
The US company Northrop Grumman will supply the Royal Netherlands Air Force with new missiles. This is the Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile Extended Range (AARGM-ER).
Here's What We Know
The Dutch Ministry has already announced the decision to acquire the anti-radiation missiles. Fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighters will be used to launch them. The potential deal is a response to the growing deterrence capability of the enemy, including advanced air defence systems.
A statement from the Dutch defence ministry said the AARGM-ER was the only missile that met all requirements. The purchase enhances the Dutch Armed Forces' ability to counter the A2/AD in Europe.
A2/AD (Anti-Access and Area Denial) is a deterrence concept based on creating a heightened risk for enemy forces to move and deploy in defended terrain. The term became popular after China and Russia began building their own weapons systems (air defence, missile defence systems) to protect areas where the enemy cannot enter without incurring damage.
