General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh, commander of Iran's Air and Space Forces, recently announced a new hypersonic ballistic missile. A week later, the weapon was officially unveiled.

Here's What We Know

The Iranian ballistic missile is called FATTAH. State media published photos from the launch ceremony of the weapon. Iranian President Ebrahim Rahisi attended the event. Along with him, commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attended the ceremony.

Iran says FATTAH is its first hypersonic ballistic missile. It has a maximum launch range of 1,400km and is "capable of penetrating all defensive shields". This is how Amir-Ali Hajizadeh described the new development. State media say the weapon "can defeat the enemy's advanced missile defence systems" and is "a great leap in the development of missiles".

The FATTAH has a top speed of 14 Mach (17,150.62km/h) during impact on the target. Separately, it is noted that the hypersonic missile can penetrate the US missile defence system along with the Israeli Iron Dome surface-to-air missile system. Given the range, it is likely that we are talking about a US missile defence system that has been deployed in the Middle East.
