Germany has changed its mind about buying eight IRIS-T surface-to-air missiles and will only order six at a cost of $975 million
Germany has already handed over two IRIS-T air defence systems to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. At the same time, the European country has not purchased any anti-aircraft missile systems for the Bundeswehr. But this will soon change.
Here's What We Know
Germany had planned to purchase eight IRIS-T air defence systems. However, it is now known that the German armed forces will receive two fewer anti-aircraft missile systems.
This was reported by the Reuters news agency citing a source in the German Ministry of Defence. The cost of the six complexes will be approximately €900 million (~$975 million). German lawmakers will make a final decision on the purchase tomorrow, 13 June.
IRIS-T is capable of engaging aircraft, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles at altitudes of up to 20km and ranges of up to 40km. The complex includes Hensoldt's TRML-4D radar station. The radar is capable of tracking up to 1,000 air targets simultaneously at a range of up to 250km.
