Sixth generation fighter programme could lose $550m of $2.326bn in 2024

The US Air Force's request for Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) funding is likely to be cut by about a quarter. This was announced by the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.

The sixth-generation fighter development program will lose $550 million, roughly the same amount by which the F-22 project was cut. However, it appears that the money will not be transferred to the Raptor programme.

The US Air Force has requested $2.326bn for NGAD for the next fiscal year. The new bill lists the $550 million as a "deferment". No further explanation was provided. It is possible that the funds will be deferred to a later date.

On 21 June, the full committee will meet for a vote. On that day the fate of 32 fifth-generation F-22 Raptor Block 20 aircraft will be decided. Apparently, the US Air Force will not be able to retire the old fighters again. Although it would save more than $2 billion over five years.
