The European air defence system will be enhanced with laser weapons. It has been developed as part of the Tactical Advanced Laser Optical System (TALOS) programme.

Here's What We Know

The European Defence Agency at the end of last month successfully completed a project to develop the laser weapon. It will be able to effectively intercept aerial targets, including drones and artillery shells. One of the great advantages of the laser system is the elimination of aerial threats with minimal collateral damage.

Sixteen companies from nine European Union countries are participating in the TALOS project. They include TNO (Netherlands), Leonardo (Italy), DLR, Airbus Defence and Space, Stelar (Germany), MBDA France, Erdyn Consultants, Université de Limoges, ONERA (France), Ustav Fotoniky a Elektroniky (Czech Republic), Wojskowa Akademia Techniczna, AMS Technologies (Poland), QinetiQ (UK), John Cockerill Defense (Belgium) and AERTEC Solutions (Spain). The project is led by the French company CILAS.
