Aerojet Rocketdyne has become the propulsion supplier for the Long Range Maneuverable Fires (LRMF) missile. The company has signed an engine development contract with Lockheed Martin.

Here's What We Know

Lockheed Martin is developing the LRMF missile for the US Army. Demand for the long-range weapon has increased against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, which demonstrates the large role of such systems. The LRMF will have a launch range of more than 1,000 km.

The missile will be launched from ground-based launchers. These include the highly mobile M142 HIMARS artillery systems and the M270 MLRS multiple-launch rocket systems, which have demonstrated high effectiveness on the battlefield in Ukraine.

We note that Lockheed Martin previously feared the purchase of Aerojet Rocketdyne, by L3Harris. The largest US defence contractor wants assurances that it will retain access to the rocket engines once the deal is done.
