The Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency has signed a contract with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to upgrade AN/TPQ-64 Sentinel radars. The radars are used in NASAMS air defence systems.

Here's What We Know

The first radar station will be upgraded by Raytheon Missile and Defence. Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace will be responsible for the remaining radar upgrades. The agreement is worth $33.72 million.

The AN/TPQ-64 Sentinel is equipped with an active phased array antenna. It was developed by Hughes Aircraft, which later became part of Raytheon. The radar station can detect helicopters, aircraft, drones and cruise missiles up to 40 km away.

The aim of the AN/TPQ-64 Sentinel upgrade is to maintain the effective range of the radar. In addition, the upgrade will improve integration capabilities with other weapon systems. Work on the contract will continue until the end of 2025.
