The US will conduct exercises using the THAAD missile defence system and the MIM-104 Patriot surface-to-air missile system
The United States intends to hold an exercise involving THAAD and MIM-104 Patriot systems. The event will take place in the Pacific Ocean near the island of Guam, which is located at a distance of less than 2,800 kilometres from Taiwan.
Here's What We Know
To practice new capabilities, the US will deploy THAAD Remote Launch on the islands of Rota and Tinian in the Pacific Ocean. The exercise will take place from 13 to 18 July 2023.
A C-17 Globemaster III aircraft assigned to the 15th Wing at Pearl Harbor-Hickam will deliver all necessary equipment from Andersen Base to Rota and Tinian Islands. It is noted that the equipment without missile interceptors will be returned to Guam after the completion of the exercise.
THAAD Remote Launch consists of one THAAD launcher, one MIM-104 Patriot launcher and additional equipment. The system allows launches to be carried out while far from the tactical fire control centre and radar station.
